Writing for an airplane

MessageAuthor

Has anyone ever written music that will be played on an airplane. You know, those tiny speakers that come through the ceiling. Any wisdom you can share? Does the mix need to be in mono? Thanks

RE: Writing for an airplane

I just did music that simulatated a 70volt system in a convenient store. I didn't go completely mono but close, as I put a little in the surround (very little & all ambience), and major high pass. It seems to have put the music in the room really well. I assume the airplane is going to be similar but with less ambience as there is a lot more absorption and diffusion in a plane. The convenient store had pretty hard, parallel surfaces. Hope this helps.

Right... This music will be played through the overhead speakers on the plane. Thanks! Paul

Hello. Although B Randall may have misunderstood the question, I think the advice still applies somewhat. If you simulate what the speaker would sound like you can tailor your mix decisions around it. I remember a while back there was some web audio I had to work on that had to be dithered down to 12 bits (maybe lower) and 32 Khz. After some playback at the required rate and resolution I found I had to have a very sharp EQ cut at 4.5 Khz. The point being that once the playback 'field' was simulated then I could tailor my EQ, compression, etc to best fit that medium. Airline speakers tend to be pretty bad, you maybe able to get a hold of something similar rummaging through pawn shops and such. Also, I don't own Speakerphone from Audio Ease, but they probably have an airplane speaker simulation. Get maybe two or three crappy speakers and use those as reference monitors. I would definitely go mono though. Good luck.
